Music video: Where to see them?

Music Videos used to be solely broadcast on television on music channels such as MTV but now everything has changed with the introduction of ...the internet......

  • YouTube has become the main platform for music promotion, with people being able to upload videos completely free of charge rather than paying for a video to feature on a television channel, more money is available to be spent creating astonishing works of art for public viewing. and of course being that the internet never sleeps, the video is accessible constantly making it an incredibly platform for audience ratings.  although criticized for possibly destroying the age of suspense, where by people would stay up till the early hours of the morning just to see the first broadcasting of a new music video, you tube has started to play an incredibly large part in modern day musical culture, with almost constant access to the internet people simply you tube whatever they want to listen to, its how people are now finding new artists that they haven't heard of before and has also become the platform for unsigned artists to demonstrate their talents and find record deals.
  • In the past music channels such as MTV have been the most successful and greatest source of music videos, being the home of hair metal through the 80s and more recently pop, RnB Hip Hop Rap etc.
However it is Clear that Music Channels are losing to the internet, with NME TV already gone and big channels such as MTV already having dedicated you tube channels demonstrates that their future is shortening.
  • Despite this some television is still having an impact on the success of music videos. The VMA's (Video Music Awards) celebrate the music video culture and in turn provide further publicity for artists, directors, producers etc. keeping the Video business going, and fueling the new 'youtube' culture as people explore winning videos and other videos produced by their creators.
